Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 9, 2026

Offthread is a Chrome extension that lets you highlight text on claude.ai, ChatGPT, or Gemini and ask short questions in a side bubble, without changing the main conversation. This policy explains what data is involved and where it goes.

Summary

Data Offthread handles

When you use Offthread, the extension may process:

Where data goes

The model provider. On Claude, Offthread uses your logged-in session in the page. On ChatGPT and Gemini, it calls the official OpenAI or Google Generative Language API with a key you provide in Options. The developer of Offthread does not receive these messages.

Your device. Bubble content, preferences, and any API key you enter are stored locally with Chrome’s extension storage so threads can survive a refresh. This data stays on your machine unless you sync Chrome data through your own Google account settings.

No Offthread backend. Offthread does not transmit your highlights, questions, or replies to any server operated by the extension author.

Permissions

Data retention and deletion

Local bubble data remains until you dismiss bubbles, clear extension storage, or uninstall Offthread. Removing the extension deletes its local storage. Content sent to a host is subject to that company’s own retention and privacy terms (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google).

Children

Offthread is not directed at children under 13. Do not use the extension if you are under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes in a material way, the “Last updated” date above will be revised and the new version published at this URL.
